Membership / Orientation

Mary Handley

Mary Handley sets up a large, active committee composed of members from Rome's many neighborhoods. She is responsible for registering all members, collecting dues and organizing all membership records. She presents the names of prospective members for Board approval and she maintains an accurate membership list. She distributes a questionnaire on the work of AWAR's various committees and informs the appropriate chairs of those members willing to volunteer on the respective committees. Mary organizes an all-day Welcome to Italy program traditionally held in October with guest speakers and luncheon.  Also, the neighborhood coffees/potluck luncheons and special activities she initiates are appreciated by newcomers throughout the year. Mary's two-year, elected, volunteer term expires in June 2010.

Mary B. Handley was born in Halifax, England. After graduating from college in Liverpool she spent 2 years on teaching assignments in Kingaroy, Brisbane and Sydney, Australia before settling in Rome 28 years ago. For more than 22 years she was the administrator of a Rome based American university where some of the facets of her multitasked role were recruitment and orientation. She now runs her own business adventure called “Marriage Italian Style,” assisting foreign couples to tie the knot in Rome. Mary still finds time to contribute in a volunteer capacity to activities in the expatriate community, she has served on the AICR and American Community Roundtable committees, has been an AWAR member for many years and is currently Chair of The Commonwealth Club of Rome.
