The Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas (FAWCO), of which AWAR is a long-standing member, has chosen as its biennial Target Project a charity to educate Syrian refugee women and children living in Amman, Jordan. Set up by two American women living there, the charity is entitled Collateral Repair Project. In 2018 AWAR is organizing various events to raise funds for the project.
The first event in February was a delicious lunch graciously hosted in her home by former AWAR President Shannon McCarthy featuring Middle Eastern cuisine prepared by members. The event also featured Syrian musician, Saleh Tawil, who played the Oud, an instrument of Arab origin. The music lightened the hearts of all, and the feet of members who danced to its rhythmic sounds, reminding us of its rich cultural heritage but also of the dramatic devastation brought about by the war that is waging there.
Our March wine and cheese evening constituted the occasion for a second fundrasing event for the FAWCO Target Project elegantly hosted by member Leslie Kiely, and her husband Neil. Taste-tempting finger foods were beautifully presented among vegetable and flower arrangements made by Leslie while Neil tended a well-supplied bar. Attendees donated to the FAWCO Target Project and the most generous donor received a gift voucher offered by Eleanor Fasan, owner of Beauty Grace Sunshine. Member Roswitha Althoff was the happy recipient of the gift voucher presented to her by member Irma Radakovich.
